Title: Sculptor (Freelance)

Reports to: Senior Sculptor/ Production / Site Manager

Job Purpose:

To provide three dimensional sculptures by translating designs (models and plans) into props as required using a variety of materials, techniques and tools, to design and create the required final product, such as carving and forming materials to the desired shape using hand and power tools, applying media to surfaces using appropriate techniques and leading industry standard materials.

Key areas of responsibility – Project specific duties:

To produce sculptures as per designs / drawings using appropriate methodologies.

In some cases, to aid the lead/ senior sculptor in completing the required works.

You may be required to sculpt as necessary on-site to aid in the completion of the project.

Replicate or enlarge three dimensional objects accurately and within a fixed time.

You will need to follow project specifications, artistic direction and achieve desired result as per the project art direction.

You may be required to carry out your own research into the style and specifications of the props required. 

On period films, this may also involve investigating how the objects would have been created during a historical period, and within a specific culture.

Liaising with production managers/ buyers, you may need to acquire the necessary tools and materials needed to make the finished item.

You will be required to make the props, working within budget, and to strict timescales.

You may be required to adapt either completed items or purchased items to achieve specific finishes.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience Essential:


You must be flexible and versatile, able to work with imagination and ingenuity.

You need to be creative and have problem-solving skills, and must be open to new ideas, and to learn new skills and techniques.

The ability to work to external deadlines, under their own initiative, is essential, and has an eye for detail and accuracy.

Work as part of the larger department, and at times as part of a sculpting team, you must have good communication skills and enjoy interacting with others.

As you may be required to work with hazardous equipment and materials, an in-depth understanding of the requirements of the relevant health and safety legislation and procedures is vital to the role.

You should have a wide knowledge of the basics of prop making: technical drawing understanding, the ability to work safely with typical industry standard materials (e.g: Various clays, plaster of paris, fibreglass, latex, foam, polystyrene, wood and steel), and the ability to work with a variety of different machinery and tools.

Other desirable skills:

Mould work, basic woodwork, knowledge of casting methodologies, character modelling,

basic welding, paint finishes, cold casting, hot wire cutting, previous project experience.

Driving licence

Computer literate
