We are looking for a freelance Prop maker to provide items by translating designs (models and plans) into props as required using a variety of materials, techniques and tools, to design and create the required props.

Title: Prop Maker (Freelance)

Reports to: Production Manager / Site Manager

Job Purpose:

To provide props by translating designs (models and plans) into props as required using a variety of materials, techniques and tools, to design and create the required props.

Key areas of responsibility – Project specific duties:

To manufacture, props, scenery and on-site construction for new projects

To build theatrical and immersive props and install these within our various diverse venues to deliver world-class shows and themed walk-through attractions.

We are looking for people with impressive creative ability along with a brilliant work ethic who doesn’t mind getting their hands dirty!

You will be required to carry out your own research into the style and specifications of the props required.

On period films, this may also involve investigating how the objects would have been created during a historical period, and within a specific culture.

Liaising with production manager/buyers, you may need to acquire the necessary tools and materials needed to make the props.

The Prop Maker will be required to make the props, working within budget, and to strict timescales.

The Prop Maker may be required to adapt hired or bought in props according to the production’s requirements.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience Essential:


You must be flexible and versatile, able to work with imagination and ingenuity.

You need to be creative and have problem-solving skills, and must be open to new ideas, and to learn new skills and techniques.

The ability to work to external deadlines, under their own initiative, is essential, and an eye for detail and accuracy.

Work as part of a larger department, and at times as part of a prop making team, you must have good communication skills and enjoy interacting with others.

As you can work with hazardous equipment and materials, an in-depth understanding of the requirements of the relevant health and safety legislation and procedures is vital to the role.

You should have a wide knowledge of the basics of prop making. Understanding of technical drawing, workshop tools and the ability to work safely with typical industry materials and methodologies. Skill set which includes:

Fibreglass work, mould making, knowledge of silicone and polyurethane products, latex, foam, polystyrene, wood, steel and basic paint skills.

Good interpersonal and communication skills

A helpful, positive and flexible approach

Energetic and resilient

Fitness is essential as the work can be physically demanding

Other desirable skills:

Upholstery work, mould work, woodwork, sculpture, casting, furniture making, modelling, electrical engineering and electronics, basic welding, PU spray application, 2k paint application, installation methodologies, previous project experience.

Driving licence

Computer literate

Experience of using CNC machinery

Holder of a current CSCS Card

IPAF/PASMA licence
